With more than 37 years’ experience in the public sector across more than 13 agencies, the CEO of the AIHW, Mr Barry Sandison will depart the AIHW in June 2021. Since joining the Institute in 2016, Mr Sandison’s priorities have been on sharpening the Institute’s strategic focus, broadening its span of work and developing key partnerships to maximise the use of its significant capabilities. More recently, he has been strengthening the Institute’s focus on the speed with which the organisation delivers data to better inform Australia’s health and welfare service providers and policy organisations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The AIHW is in its 33rd year of operation producing authoritative and accessible information and statistics to inform and support better policy and service delivery decisions, ultimately leading to better health and wellbeing for all Australians. It is a dynamic organisation that employs over 500 highly skilled people, primarily in Canberra. The Institute has strong collaborative arrangements with Commonwealth and State & Territory Government agencies and excellent working relationships with researchers, professional and industry groups and consumers.

We work with a wide range of stakeholders in the health and welfare sector and convene or participate in around 100 committees with experts from many different subject areas, and so we're informed by contemporary best practice and a wide range of perspectives.

The CEO role for the Institute sets the future direction of the organisation including further developing the AIHW’s provision of statistics and information about the impact of COVID-19 on the health and welfare of Australians. The new CEO will be accountable to the AIHW Board for the governance, leadership, business management and overall performance of this complex information management agency.
