New Indigenous Health Performance Framework report and website

Since 2006, the AIHW’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Performance Framework (HPF) reports have provided important information about Indigenous Australians’ health outcomes, key drivers of health and the performance of the health system.

In partnership with the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), I’m very pleased to announce the AIHW’s new website, which accompanies the latest HPF summary report.

The site brings together information from a variety of sources to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date view of the state of Indigenous health outcomes, health system performance and the broader determinants of health in one area.

While the data presented in the report pre-date the COVID-19 pandemic, the response to the pandemic, and other major global events such as the Black Lives Matters protests, have highlighted recurring themes from Indigenous health policy and research in Australia over the past three decades. This includes significant, continuing imbalances in health status and outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

While there have been some improvements, many areas of concern highlighted in the Framework are the focus of new targets in the National Agreement on Closing the Gap signed by the Coalition of Peaks and all Australian Governments in mid-2020.

Well done to all the teams involved in the production of today’s report and website—important resources designed to inform policy, planning, program development and research.

A special thanks also to our stakeholder groups for their significant contributions to the HPF reporting process, and we look forward to continuing our research in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
