All data linkage projects must be approved by the AIHW Ethics Committee.
The AIHW Ethics Committee will only consider data linkage projects that include a technical assessment, approved by the AIHW Data Integration Services Centre (DISC). You should allow a minimum of 3 months to complete this process for new data linkage projects.
The table below provides key dates to assist you to prepare all documentation for submission to the AIHW Ethics Committee. It is your responsibility to ensure all requirements have been met within the required deadlines.
- Feasibility questionnaire: A short feasibility questionnaire collects information that will allow DISC to identify any technical, privacy or ethical issues that need to be addressed before completing a technical assessment. Fees apply for DISC feasibility review. See data linkage costs for more information. After the feasibility review, a technical assessment form will be provided for feasible projects.
- Technical assessment form: The technical assessment provides the AIHW Ethics Committee with information about the technical elements of your project. DISC is committed to working together with researchers to ensure the technical assessment form meets all project linkage, data custodian and AIHW Ethics Committee requirements.
- DISC approval of technical assessment form: All technical assessment forms must address feedback provided by DISC, data custodians and privacy review before they are approved by DISC for submission to the AIHW Ethics Committee.

Note: The deadlines provided above account for the time required for DISC to seek internal data custodian and legal review on your behalf. DISC will make every effort to progress your project as quickly as possible. DISC, however, cannot guarantee all projects will be approved in time for AIHW Ethics Committee submission. Submission deadlines assume all documentation meets AIHW Ethics Committee submission requirements.

Deadlines for amendments to approved linkage projects
All amendments to approved linkage projects require DISC approval before they are submitted to the AIHW Ethics Committee. You should allow a minimum of 3 weeks for DISC review and approval for project amendments.
For amendments, the following forms must be completed and submitted to DISC by the required date:
- Amendment request form: The amendment request form is required for all changes to approved data linkage projects. The form will not be accepted if it is incomplete.
- Updated technical assessment: All technical assessment forms must be provided in Microsoft Word format. All updates must be marked with track changes against the most recent technical assessment submitted to the AIHW Ethics Committee. If your project does not have a technical assessment, please contact DISC to discuss the requirements for your proposed amendments.
