Summary

Measuring the number of deaths, and estimating fatal burden by cause of death is essential for public health intervention and planning.

This data visualisation tool provides interactive data displays of preliminary deaths and fatal burden estimates by disease or injury in Australia as part of the Australian Burden of Disease Study 2015. It enables comparisons across age groups, sex and certain population groups (state/territory, remoteness areas, and socioeconomic group). In addition, changes in fatal burden over time can be explored.

Fatal burden estimates are presented for 17 disease groups and around 200 specific diseases and injuries.

Use the interactive graphs on each tab to explore the number or rate of deaths and fatal burden (YLL) in Australia in the years 2003, 2011 and 2015 for selected disease groups or specific diseases of interest.

What is fatal burden?

Fatal burden is the impact of dying prematurely from disease or injury and makes up the fatal component of burden of disease analysis which measures the impact of different diseases or injuries on a population. It is measured using years of life lost (YLL) due to premature death.

YLL is calculated by summing the number of deaths at each age, then multiplying by the remaining life expectancy at that age according to a reference life table which reflects the ideal life span.

1 year of life lost (YLL) corresponds to 1 year lost due to premature death.

What is included in this data visualisation tool?

This data visualisation tool includes:

  • National preliminary estimates of deaths and YLL
  • State/territory estimates of deaths and YLL
  • Remoteness area and socioeconomic group YLL estimates
  • YLL trends over time and;
  • Technical notes on methods, data sources and definitions used.

Further information on how to interpret specific visualisations is shown when hovering over the information icons on each page.

Preliminary national estimates

This data visualisation provides interactive data displays on deaths and fatal burden by disease or injury in Australia for the years 2003, 2011 and 2015, including differences across age groups and sex.
