The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program annual monitoring report 2009 presents national statistics on key program activity, performance and outcome indicators for people invited to screen in 2008. Trend and national bowel cancer incidence and mortality data are also included to provide context. The goal of the NBCSP is to reduce the morbidity and mortality from bowel cancer by actively recruiting and screening the target population for early detection or prevention of the disease.
Of the 685,915 people invited into the NBCSP in 2008, an estimated 39.3% participated
6.6% of 248,475 participants who correctly completed a FOBT had a positive screening result
Of the 7,042 people who returned a positive FOBT, 63 confirmed and 239 suspected cancers were found
Of the 16,436 people who returned a positive FOBT, 42.9% had a primary health care practitioner visit recorded
