This report presents statistics on the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program for Australians invited to take part between July 2011 and June 2012. The goal of the NBCSP is to reduce the morbidity and mortality from bowel cancer by actively recruiting and screening the target population for early detection or prevention of the disease.

Findings from this report:
  • 35% of the 930,000 people invited between July 2011 and June 2012 returned a completed bowel cancer screening kit

  • Of those who underwent a colonoscopy, advanced adenomas were found in 857 participants; 1 in 15 colonoscopies

  • 22,500 participants (7.0%) who returned a valid screening test had a positive screening result

  • 1 participant in every 32 who underwent a colonoscopy was diagnosed with a confirmed or suspected cancer
