This report presents statistics on the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program for Australians invited to take part from July 2012 to June 2013. The goal of the NBCSP is to reduce the morbidity and morality from bowel cancer by actively recruiting and screening the target population for early detection or prevention of the disease.
33.5% of the 964,000 people invited from July 2012 to June 2013 returned a completed bowel cancer screening kit
23,500 participants (7.5%) who returned a valid screening test had a positive screening result
One participant in every 32 who underwent a colonoscopy was diagnosed with a confirmed or suspected cancer
70% of those with a positive screening result were recorded as having a colonoscopy
