This fact sheet presents the prevalence of stroke in Western Australia in 2010—that is, the number of people who had at least 1 hospital admission for stroke in the previous 10 years and were still alive on 30 June 2010.
For those aged 85 and over more women than men had experienced a stroke, reflecting the longer life span of women
Over half (55%) of strokes occurred in males
Only 17% of stroke cases occurred in those aged under 55 years
In Western Australia, 14,900 people (0.6%) had a stroke between 2000 and 2010 and were still alive in 2010
