  • There were 11.5 million hospitalisations in Australia’s public and private hospitals in 2018–19

  • In 2018–19, there were 8.4 million presentations to emergency departments

  • Hospitals accounted for the highest proportion of spending across all areas of health expenditure (40%)—$74 billion

  • 54% of hospitalisations in public hospitals were same-day admissions and 72% in private hospitals
