Measure 1.1.2: The number and proportion of Indigenous Australians who reported eye or vision problems.

Most of the vision loss experienced by Indigenous Australians is potentially preventable. Measures of the prevalence of vision impairment and blindness are important for monitoring changes in eye health over time and identifying the need for services.

  • In 2012–13, one-third (33%) or 213,000 Indigenous Australians reported that they had an eye or sight problem.
  • After adjusting for age, the proportion of Indigenous Australians with an eye or sight problem was 8% lower than that of non-Indigenous Australians.
