  • In 2015–17, there were around 1,900 hospitalisations for Indigenous Australians due to injury to the eye—a rate of 1.3 per 1,000 population.
  • The crude hospitalisation rate for Indigenous Australians aged 35 to 44 (2.6 per 1,000) was more than 8 times the rate for non-Indigenous Australians of the same age (0.3 per 1,000).
  • Rates of hospitalisation for Indigenous Australians were highest in Remote and Very remote areas combined (2.7 per 1,000). This is more than double the rate in Inner and Outer regional areas combined (1.0 per 1,000) and more than triple the rate in Major cities (0.7 per 1,000).
