Netball

An estimated 622,000 Australians aged 15 and over played netball in 2019–20.  There were 1,200 injury hospitalisations attributed to netball—1,080 female and 120 male. This was 540 less than the year before. For those aged 15 and over, the rate of hospitalisations was about 168 per 100,000 participants.

The highest number of hospitalisations was in the 20–24 age group (Figure 1).

Almost 6 in 10 of these hospitalisations were soft-tissue injuries (59%), while more than a quarter were fractures (28%) (Figure 2).

There were 25 hospitalisations for concussion.

The main injury was to the hip or leg in more than 6 in 10 of cases (61%) (Figure 3).

Where it was specified, the most common cause of injury was overexertion (38%), followed by falls involving an object (23%) (Figure 4).

Seasonality and COVID-19

Netball injury hospitalisations tend to peak in the autumn and winter months. The interruption caused by COVID-19 is evident in the drop from March 2020 (Figure 5). There were 80% less admissions from March to June 2020 than in the same period of 2019.

1. Months have been standardised to 31 days.
2. A scale up factor has been applied to June admissions to account for cases not yet separated.
