Birthweight and gestation are inter-related. The size of a baby at time of birth may be influenced by a number of factors such as term at birth and/or pathological processes.
Birthweight percentiles are expressed in terms of population percentiles and indicate the percentage of all babies of the same gestation that are smaller or larger than a particular baby. For more information see Table A38.
Multiple pregnancy and birth carries greater mortality risk for the baby, with perinatal mortality rates increasing in accordance to birth plurality. For more information see Table A12.
