Older people use permanent residential aged care for different reasons: some enter only briefly at the end of life, while others live in permanent residential aged care for an extended period. This Infocus report highlights that patterns of GP visits vary between people, as well as between residential aged care facilities. It also points out some of the limitations of only using MBS data.
Most people in permanent residential aged care had at least 1 GP visit while living in care
The proportion of people with a GP visit increased over time
People had around 2 GP visits each month—rising to about 5 if they were closer to the end of their life
1 in 10 people had no MBS claims for GP visits—most of these people received GP care funded through other channels
