In 2015, a number of supplementary codes for chronic conditions were implemented in admitted patient care data in Australia. This report evaluates the use of the supplementary codes for the purpose of population health monitoring in Australia and provides evidence for including these codes in future analysis and linked data assets.
1 in 3 hospitalisations in 2019–20 had at least one supplementary code
When introduced in 2015-16 there was a drop in additional diagnosis for one in 3 conditions with a supplementary code
Including supplementary codes in case definitions increases the capture of some chronic conditions up to 15-fold
Supplementary codes are assigned in a minority of hospitalisations of people with a prior diagnosis for the condition
Amendments
19 July 2023 – The ICD-10-AM diagnosis codes mapped to Systemic lupus erythematosus (U86.3), Osteoporosis (U86.4), Rheumatoid arthritis (U86.1) and Obesity (U78.1 ) were incompletely and/or incorrectly listed in the notes tables of the supplementary data tables and relevant appendices.These have been corrected to align with the ICD-10-AM diagnosis codes that were used in the analysis.
