Children exposed to tobacco smoke in the home

Definition: The proportion of households with dependent children (aged 0–14) where adults report smoking inside the home.

  • In 2016, 2.8% of households with children aged 14 and under included a person who smoked inside the home.
  • This proportion has fallen by 91% since 1995, when 31% of households with dependent children included a person who smoked inside the home.
  • The rate of only smoking outside the home rose from 17% in 1995 to a high of 29% in 2010, and fell to 26% in 2013 and 2016.
  • Over the same period, the proportion of households where no one regularly smokes at home increased by 38%, from 52% of households in 1995 to 72% in 2016.
