Use of illicit drugs

The following data visualisation shows recent (past 12 months) use of illicit drugs by gender and drug type (per cent), 2007 to 2022–2023, nationally and in each state and territory.

This line graph shows the proportion of people in each state and territory who reported using any illicit drug, cannabis, cocaine, or ecstasy in the last 12 months between 2007 and 2022–2023. Across all jurisdictions and drug types, males were more likely than females to use drugs. The proportion of females who used drugs in 2022–2023 in Australia was markedly higher than 2019, while for males it was slightly higher than 2019.
